Tap is a style of dance characterized by the sound of the metal tap striking the floor. Tap utilizes rhythm, syncopation, and sound in addition to movement. An emphasis is placed on musicality, expression, and improvisation. Senior tap is offered in two levels; class placement is determined by skill level and students may repeat levels until they have achieved mastery. These classes are aimed for our senior population and are instructed at a gentler pace than our other adult classes. Our senior tappers may choose to perform in the annual recital. Registration is offered as a standard (year) offering or on a drop-in basis.
Senior beginner tap is a wonderful entry or reintroduction to dance for older adults who have little dance experience or who have not laced up their tap shoes in some time. Dancers will learn basic rhythmic tap skills, and terminology. Dancers will participate in warm up, center, and traveling exercises. Fundamentals such as balance and general alignment are also introduced at this level. (No prerequisite.)
Senior advanced beginner tap is an extension of our tap program for older adults who have more extensive experience. Complex combinations are added to the warm up and traveling exercises. Musicality and phrasing are emphasized, as are clean sounds and proper body alignment. (Students should have completed senior beginner tap or have the permission of instructor to register.)
