Tap is a style of dance characterized by the sound of the metal tap striking the floor. Tap utilizes rhythm, syncopation, and sound in addition to movement. An emphasis is placed on musicality, expression, and improvisation. Tap is offered in four levels; class placement is determined by skill level and students often repeat levels until they have achieved mastery. Combined levels (ex. Tap 1/2) indicate that students approved for Tap at either level (Tap 1 or Tap 2) are able to register for this class.
Dancers will learn basic tap skills and terminology. Fundamentals such as balance and general alignment are also introduced at this level. (No prerequisite. Ages 6 and older may register. Typical age range is 6-8 years.)
Dancers are taught to add sounds to the basic tap steps. Musicality is stressed while teaching the student to count their sounds between the beats to create more complex rhythms. (Class placement determined by skill level. Typical age range is 8-10 years.)
More intricate variations are added at this level. As the complexity of the steps increases, it is necessary for the student to focus on body alignment to maintain balance and build strength. (Class placement determined by skill level. Typical age range is 10-12 years.)
Dancers strive for clean sounds while executing difficult combinations. Higher speed steps, more complex rhythms, and tricks are taught to challenge our students at this level. Dancers are taught to perform, not to just execute their steps. (Class placement determined by skill level. Typical age range is 13-18 years.)
Dancer has mastered the preceding TDC tap level or has permission from the instructor. There is no prerequisite for Tap 1. Students must be age 6 or older.
